Terry and Marg Borland weren’t shopping for a stallion when Tassas Reflection entered their lives. In fact, they were looking for exactly the opposite – a quiet gelding for Marg.
When they asked Nathan Wilson if he knew of anything suitable, he pointed them towards the horse he bred and was campaigning, Tassas Reflection. “I told him I didn’t need another stallion,” Terry says.

A few weeks later, Terry asked again. Nathan’s answer hadn’t changed. “He referred me straight back to Tassas Reflection.“
On the drive home, Marg finally settled the matter. “She said, ‘If you think he’s alright, why don’t you just get him?’ “ The plan, however, didn’t quite work out as intended. “She’s had about three rides on him,” Terry laughs.
Tassas Reflection had already amassed an impressive show record in his first two seasons competing with Nathan. He won the Rocky Rush Classic Challenge, Cloncurry Futurity Draft and placed in other ASCA Challenges as a 4yo. The following year, he won his first Derby Challenge at ARBC and the following weekend won the Nutrien Supreme Sale 5yo & Under Challenge.
With such a promising career start, it may seem surprising that the Borlands’ bought Tassas Reflection as a quiet, general riding horse. Terry admits they didn’t really appreciate the calibre of horse they had at the time.
For Terry, a competition horse should be more than just an arena performer. He believes they need to have a strong work ethic and be capable of handling a hard day’s work. So when they arrived home, Terry put Tassas Reflection to work.
Terry spent a lot of time initially taking the horse for long trots and then took him into the hill country, where the young stallion quickly proved himself to be sure-footed and willing in even the roughest terrain.
“One day I rode him 14 kilometres through the hills, and it was pretty tough going,” Terry recalls. “I ran into a mate fixing a fence, and he said, ‘What are you doing on that stallion? I can’t believe you rode him through those hills.’ I told him, ‘If he can’t do a day’s work, he’s no good to me.’”

With a solid foundation behind him, the focus shifted to gaining consistent exposure on the campdraft circuit. He spent eight months with Sally Stevenson but Terry and Marg eventually decided they wanted him closer to home.
The stallion returned to Queensland, where he has been campaigned by Leah Read ever since, and stands at Beljay Performance Horses throughout the breeding season.
“Leah does a sensational job with him”, Terry said. “We see him often and go to a lot of the events.”
For Terry and Marg, it is Tassas Reflection’s consistency and integrity that set him apart. “He is so versatile. He has won major events in both challenges and campdrafts against some very good horses,” Terry says.
“He’s not just an all-rounder; he’s a highly competitive horse in whatever you want to put him in. When we sent him to Australia’s Greatest Horseman, he had never competed in that type of cowhorse event before, and he still finished sixth. He can go from that one weekend to a challenge, then a campdraft, and be competitive every time. That speaks volumes for his versatility.”
More than just being competitive, Terry believes it is the stallion’s immense ability that sets a high benchmark wherever he goes. “Even when he doesn’t win, he makes the other horses work hard if they want to beat him. You have to be at your best to go around him. He has this ability to turn it on when it counts, and he continually turns it on.”
Terry believes one of Tassas Reflection’s greatest strengths is his exceptional athleticism.

“He can go from fast to slow, change leads effortlessly and stay completely controlled in his movements,” Terry says.
“His quick footwork and lightness make him an incredible horse, but he’s not one you can just sit on. He makes everything look easy, but he feels absolutely everything. He responds to the smallest shift, almost before you’ve finished thinking it.”
“He’s one hell of a horse. It’s a credit to both his natural ability and the training he’s had.”
With the first progeny now in work as of 2026, Terry believes it won’t be long before they begin to demonstrate their true potential. “We’re very close to seeing what his progeny can really do. Everyone who’s ridden them is very happy with them.”
For Terry and Marg, Tassas Reflection is a one-of-a-kind horse. What began as the search for a quiet horse to ride around the place quickly snowballed as the couple realised just how much talent they had acquired.
This horse holds a special place in both their hearts. And while Terry is quick to point out that the horse was bought for Marg – and that she doesn’t ride him all that often – he says that, at the end of the day, “He is her horse.”

Nathan Tassa N Smart out of the Rockhampton Quarter Horse Sale as a 2yo colt (the same day/same sale as Seligman Spin). Nathan trained TNS out and says this is where he learned so much.
TNS went on to win Novice reining horse of the year with Warren Backhouse, many Open Challenges with Nathan, Rookie challenges with various riders (including an Open Challenge and a Rookie Challenge with Brydie in 2015) plus two Campdrafts from not a lot of starts.
Now 27 years old he looks an absolute picture. His books are closed to the public however NWTS breeds many mares to him each year and continues to freeze his semen where possible.
Nathan again purchased Shez Lethal out of the Rockhampton Quarter Horse Sale many years ago. She was a ridden mare that was used as a safe horse for backpackers to ride. Unbeknown to Nathan at the time, she would go on to be his most valuable broodmare. Being by Lethal Lena & out of a Spinifex mare, it was her breeding that caught Nathan’s eye initially. He says, “It was the best $5,000 I ever spent”.
In 2015 Brydie drafted Shez Lethal and soon fell in love with the way she would cutout and run a cow, however both Brydie and Nathan soon realised she was more valuable as a broodmare.
She is also the dam of:
