Brad and Briony Comiskey had originally been primarily looking at mares going through the 2021 Nutrien sale. They were looking for mares with a combination of attributes from both the Stock Horse and Quarter Horse breeds that would make ideal challenge/campdraft athletes. Their thoughts were to buy a mare that could be competed on, but also flushed for embryos.
However their thought processes altered when they saw the pre sale videos posted by Isaac Westerhuis of his One Time Royalty colt. They were really taken with this 2yo colt and instead of looking at mares for potential breeding options they thought he was the ideal animal for what they are trying to breed for the challenge/campdraft world.
Seeing him in the flesh reinforced their initial thoughts that he was exactly what they were looking for. He was balanced and athletic with great eye appeal and a wonderful temperament. He had plenty of leg under him to chase a cow and his confirmation and soundness were exceptional. He looked and moved a lot like his superstar father, One Time Royalty, plus his dam’s mare line added to his genetic strength.
His dam, Purrfect had been an NCHA Futurity finalist in both the Open and NP Divisions, injury unfortunately cutting her career short. However, she proved herself as an outstanding broodmare with multiple progeny excelling in the performance horse world. Her dam Special T Spin was an NCHA Futurity Champion.
So, Springsteen appeared to be the “purrfect “ package.
The plan for Springsteen was always to prepare him for the 2023 Nutrien Classic Challenge so he first went to long term friend Phil Dawson who spent the time on him in the cutting pen and at some Pre Works to establish the foundation the Comiskeys require for all their horses for campdraft and challenge.
Showing all the class they expected, renowned horseman Cameron Parker then agreed to start preparing for the Dry Work component of the Challenge. Cameron loved how good minded and good moving Springsteen is but unfortunately due to Cameron’s work commitments Bruce, as Springsteen is known, is going to 2023 Nutrien under the helm of successful trainer, Matt Moffat.
One Time Royalty and Purrfect are names that will ensure plenty of people are interested in tuning in as this youngster makes his competition debut at Nutrien.
