1992 Warwick Gold Cup Winner – Bob Black & Commissioner

Bev Cheers, author of “The Warwick Gold Cup – Campdrafting’s Memories and Magic Moments”, describes Bob Black as ‘Campdrafting’s Gentleman of Gentlemen”, he even proof read the book for her.

Bob won his 1st Gold Cup in 1975, but he believed Commissioner to be the best horse he ever had and although he only won half a dozen drafts, they did include a Gold Cup and two Toogoolawah Opens.
When asked to relive his Gold Cup victory, Bob was quite emotional as he remembered the effort Commissioner put into that final run.

“The sand was very heavy that year and the going was difficult. Coming round the second peg I had no chance of gating the steer, but I just asked Commissioner for a big effort and the amount he gave was extraordinary. I didn’t punish him, I just asked him. It’s probably not the best run I’ve done but it’s certainly the most special, because I remember the effort he made for me.”

Commissioner was 17 when he won his Gold Cup and he also came 3rd in the Canning Downs that year. He retired the following year.

Bob’s story is Gold Cup “Gold”!
