Peter Shakespeare is an avid horse breeder who loves genetics and loves breeding his best mares to the very best sires. Shines Like Metallic is the result of one such breeding.
Peter is a loyal believer in the One Moore Roc genetics whose progeny include the great One Moore Spin. Peter’s mare lines and his famous stallion, One Stylish Pepto, are all direct descendants of One Moore Roc. Full sisters, Stylish in Time and Stylish Unit are two of his wonderful mares carrying the One Moore Roc genetics and Peter cannot speak highly enough of them as athletes and brood mares.
Stylish in Time was bred by Bunyarra Park and purchased by Peter as a youngster. With wonderful cutting genetics a very late decision was made to prepare her for the Futurity and she was sent to Mark Buttsworth. With only eight months training she was ready to compete in Tamworth. This preparation is testament to her genuine ability as most horses would not be capable of competing at this level after such a short preparation. However, misfortune interfered and she was unable to compete, but after recovering from her short illness she was entered for the Toowoomba Futurity. Again misfortune interfered and Mark suffered serious injury just days before the event. Stylish in Time was transferred to Heath Sinclair’s stable and with a very short time together they were able to post three glorious runs to become the Toowoomba Futurity Champions in 2013. This win confirmed Shakey’s belief in the mare and he knew that a Metallic Cat foal from her would be something special.
Shakey had seen a very young Metallic Cat working on video and was so impressed that he set about importing semen from him while he was still a relatively unknown sire in the U.S. He is now firmly established as arguably one of the best cutting sires the world has seen and his progeny are performing on every big stage. So when Stylish in Time gave birth to this wonderful colt Shakey was sure he had something special, however he doesn’t keep colts so as he grew it was always the plan to sell him.
Belinda Staib was an interested party who saw Peter’s ad and she immediately recognised the mother and held great respect for the mare line.
Belinda is a keen horse breeder who had been trying to breed to Metallic Cat for 3 years. Through no fault of anyone’s her breeding program had not been successful and she had lost a series of Metallic Cat embryos, including twins. Disappointed at having not secured a Metallic Cat foal of her own the idea of buying a quality colt carrying these impressive bloodlines attracted her. Although it was a wedge of money she decided she was prepared to take the gamble on this unbroken colt.
She took the colt home while his future was organised and after discussions within the industry Belinda decided to send her colt through the Phil Dawson training program.
Shines Like Metallic was then sent to Steve Smith to be broken. Encouragement came shortly after when Steve rang after Week 1 to say he was very impressed with the young colt. Eight weeks later and at the end of the breaking program Steve was happy to tell Belinda that the colt really had the X factor. He then moved straight to Phil’s stables with a huge wrap.
His preparation was always directed towards the 2018 NCHA Futurity and Belinda is extremely happy with Phil’s program. Both she and partner Ken Frost have full trust in Phil and wife Bernie’s work as they are such genuine people to work with.
This has been their first experience in the Cutting industry so they needed their honesty to appreciate where their horse was heading. By Futurity time he was right on track and the connections were quietly optimistic. After winning the 2nd Go Round and scoring well with three tough cows in the 1st Go Round everyone was confident going into the Final. Another confident performance saw him finish a very creditable =3rd in the 2018 NCHA Futurity, a result that Belinda & Ken felt indicated that he had a bright future in the industry that he was bred to perform in.
They were dead right, only weeks later he became the 2018 DDCC Open Futurity Champion with Phil Dawson.
