Tom Henry and Scott Waters acted quickly when they heard WP Smooth Talker was on the market. The flashy young stallion is exactly the kind of horse these long-time friends and business partners like. They believe he has the perfect combination of top-class competitor, with impeccable breeding, conformation and looks.
Tom and Scott have been mates for ten years and have joined forces in a number of ventures over that time, from goat production to racehorses and campdrafters.
Tom knew of Smooth Talker when he came up for sale, having been impressed by his performances in both cutting and campdrafting.
For Tom and Scott, Smooth Talker stood out from the other horses offered for sale.
Being out of a highly regarded open campdraft mare and by an elite international sire, the pair noted straight away his potential as a future outcross over Conman mares – while also recognising his versatility as a sire to breed progeny for both disciplines.
As a 6yo (as of June 2024), WP Smooth Talker already has progeny on the ground. In fact, he was appealing to mare owners well before winning an Open campdraft.
Smooth Talker has a proven performance ability in cutting and campdrafting, with an impressive list of achievements in both sports. As a 5yo, he won the Open Cutting at the 2023 AQHA National Finals. He then went to the campdraft arena and won his first Novice in a matter of months, and then his first Open draft soon after.
To achieve these milestones while so young, and change disciplines so seamlessly is an indicator of his trainability, sheer talent, and temperament. These are traits that are already showing up in his progeny.
Smooth Talker has been with trainer Hugh Miles right through. Hugh has nothing but high praise for the horse, saying he is equally strong in both disciplines and is very much like his dam, which Hugh says is one of the best horses he has ever ridden, and also producer of other impressive progeny.
“He is very trainable, soft, balanced, feely, athletic and a very intelligent animal. He has been very easy to train,” Hugh said.
“He could easily go back to cutting if we wanted him to, he is that good.” Hugh also said that he firmly believes Smooth Talker is the perfect outcross sire and that his trainability, mind, and ability are invaluable assets for any sire.
Because they strongly believe in Smooth Talker, Scott and Tom offer attractive breeding incentives.
