Meet Oaks Stylish Windstorm, known as Chubby, a stallion whose name may raise an eyebrow, but whose presence commands admiration. His playful name belies his strength, athleticism and the effortless ability he brings to every discipline.

He is the quiet achiever who excels across disciplines. He adapts to every situation with ease and is well-known for being low-fuss and one of the kindest stallions around. His laid-back nature does not undermine his drive to perform. Like his predecessors, Chubby is a skilled cow horse and an incredible athlete.
Chubby was bred at Tamarang Stud by Sonia Auld and purchased as a 2yo at the 2012 Landmark Classic Sale. The young Peptos Stylish Oak colt by the phenomenal mare Oaks Windstorm ticked all the boxes for Sonya and Geoff Grant. “We couldn’t fault his preworks, he had excellent conformation and great presence in the sale ring,” Sonya remembers.
At the time, the colt didn’t have a paddock name. His big Quarter Horse cheeks reminded Sonya of a chipmunk grinding away at his food, and she started affectionately referring to him as Chubby Cheeks, and eventually just Chubby.
The plan was to send Chubby for cutting training and after his Futurity year, phase him across to campdrafting. Chubby was sent to Todd Graham, who had a lot of success on Oaks Windstorm. “Todd held him in high regard”, the Grant family remembers. Unfortunately, an injury took him out of action, and he missed his Futurity season.

It was time to look ahead. Chubby was sent to Sean O’Hanlon to prepare for this next chapter before taking a short break for his first breeding season. In 2016, he returned to Tamworth ready for the Classic. A last-minute decision by Sean to sit out the event meant that Chubby would be campaigned by riders who had never stepped on him, Ben Hall in the campdraft, and Felicity Burton in the challenge.
Sonya Grant admits to being a bit nervous when Ben asked her to bring Chubby to his truck an hour before his run.
“We wondered, ‘how would this go’, especially when we arrived as requested and Ben simply said, ‘I’ll hop on and give him a little try in the warmup ring – he will be fine’”.
As he would go on to prove time and again, Chubby adapted effortlessly to his rider, making the Campdraft final and finishing 4th in the U5 Years Challenge with Felicity.
Chubby went home from Tamworth with Felicity, and she campaigned him at the Landmark Supreme, placing 6th in the Challenge. He was then campaigned from 2017 to 2019 between Sam Campbell and Kimberley Sammon before returning solely to Sam in 2021. Kimberley broke his Maiden status and won multiple cutouts on Chubby, and Sam finished 6th in the 2021 Warwick Stallion Draft and made the Gold Cup final.

It was no surprise when Chubby made another effortless transition, this time to working cowhorse events, initially with great success by Sonya and Geoff’s daughter, Ashleigh Roche. She attended a clinic with Patrick Hopgood of Foxdale Cowhorses, which resulted in the highly successful partnership between Patrick and Chubby, including winning the 2024 NRCHAA National Finals Champion Open Cowhorse.
“Outside of the arena, Chubby could be mistaken for a quiet kids horse. He can be lined up outside the camp asleep, but once he steps inside the camp or the arena, he knows his job and wants to be seen. He is happiest when working a beast,” Ashleigh said.
Chubby’s progeny have his cool, calm and kind nature and have proven themselves in cutting, campdrafting, working cowhorse, barrel racing, ranch sorting and even pony club events; as well as being great family and work horses.
Chubby’s legacy is already well underway, not only through his own remarkable versatility and quiet brilliance but also through the success of his progeny across multiple arenas. Chubby has proven himself to be more than just a standout performer – he is a true cornerstone of performance horse breeding. His calm demeanour, athletic ability, and willingness to adapt have made him a once-in-a-lifetime horse. As his progeny continue to make their mark, Chubby’s influence will be felt for generations to come.
Chubby has excelled at the highest level across multiple disciplines, including campdraft, challenge and working cowhorse events.
