Remember EI in 2007? Well that’s when the Mewburn Roll the Dice story started.
In 2007 in the midst of EI no horse movement was permitted and that included transporting mares to stallions for live cover. This was also before AI was used as widely as it is today in the Stock Horse industry.

Michael and Vicki Hiscock had four good mares they were breeding from, Black Betty, Hazelwood Advice, Phoebe and Tip Top. Unable to send them away to breed Michael joined them all to a young 2yo colt he had purchased from the Manning family in Mansfield the previous year as a weanling. His name was Davilak Ice Man. Iceman was by Arundle Cadman and from Davilak Jemima, by Mick Ward’s Commando. Michael had campaigned Jemima for the Mannings with great success winning the SCA Novice Horse of the Year then 15 Open Drafts plus placing in the Canning Downs a couple of times.
The resultant breeds presented the Hiscock’s with three foals, Bamalamb, Davey and Nix. These 3 are all now multiple Open Draft winners and all would without doubt be rated amongst the best horses in the country. Their achievements speak for themselves, and their connection is that they are all by Davilak Ice Man who unfortunately lost his life in a paddock accident before their births.
As the ability of these three horses became evident Michael became acutely aware of the need to breed another Iceman. With Jemima no longer producing Michael’s best mare was Hazelwood Advice so the easy decision was made to join her to Arundle Cadman. A couple of years passed before a successful pregnancy was achieved and that foal is Mewburn Roll the Dice.
From here the story is similar to the successful program that has produced all the well performed Hiscock horses. Roll the Dice was broken in by Michael as a 2yo and has all the steady and purposeful preparation needed for a long and successful campdraft career.

Michael believes temperament and ability to rate a cow are the most important attributes in cow horses followed by longevity, as they like to have good horses that stay on the truck competing at the top level for a long time. Roll the Dice is blessed with an abundance of these genetic attributes and longevity is certainly in the family. His mother Hazelwood Advice won the Gold Cup as a10yo and as a 20yo and is still perfectly sound. Similarly Bamalamb, Davey and Nix are still all on the truck, sound, happy and performing at the highest levels.
Roll the Dice is currently 5yo and he has 2 fillies on the ground for Michael and Vicki and 5 foals belonging to clients. He has 24 foals in utero so his contribution to the Campdraft genetic pool is well underway.
Michael has made a big statement when asked about how he rates Roll the Dice in comparison to his other elite horses. He says he is the best 4yo he has ever worked with, but he is also confident that his performance over time will hopefully match all their horses. He remembers that Hazelwood Advice improved greatly throughout her career which relates back to their emphasis on longevity.
Roll the Dice was started as a 4yo and had 3 starts for 3 scores, Weeks later as he turned 5 he collected his first ribbon, an =2nd in Bollon Charity Campdraft Maiden A.
Roll The Dice hails from talented stock, there is no greater illustration than Michael & Vicki Hiscock’s performance at the 2023 Warwick Gold Cup. Hazelwood Advice & Michael won the Gold Cup for the 2nd time and Vicki won the Champion of Champions with Mewburn Bamalam.
Several records were broken that day:
Hazelwood Advice will go down in history as one of only 2 horses to win the coveted Warwick Gold Cup:
Arundle Cadman is an Open Campdrafter.
In 2007, Michael and Vicki briefly owned a colt by Cadman named Davilak Ice Man. Before his sudden loss, they bred him to three of their mares, producing Mewburn Bamalam, Mewburn Davey, and Mewburn Nix. All three went on to achieve remarkable success for the Hiscock family, earning numerous wins and accolades across the country.
Reflecting on this legacy in 2019, Michael decided to once again seek a foal by Arundle Cadman – this time from Hazelwood Advice. The result was Mewburn Roll the Dice.
