If ever a horse speaks for himself it would be Mewburn Bewick. His performance is A Grade, his breeding is A Grade and his attitude and temperament complete the package. He was bred by Michael and Vicki Hiscock to be a champion and a champion he is.

His dam is the legendary Hazelwood Advice, dual Gold Cup winner of 2013 and 2023. Michael describes her as the ultimate professional and her high level of calm and cool sets her apart from others in the high pressure moments. When the heat is on she reliably goes up to the next level. She won her Maiden as a 3yo and in 2023 as a 20yo she won the 1st Round of the Chinchilla Grandfather Clock with 91 and won her 2nd Warwick Gold Cup. This performance places her in an extremely elite club as she is only the 3rd mare in history to win 2 Gold Cups, the others being Arn Cooke’s Norelle in the 50’s and 60’s and Bob Palmer’s Breezette in the early 80’s.
The length of her career is full credit to her attitude and how she relishes the big atmospheres.
Bewick’s sire, Bonlac Gigolo is also a Warwick winner, being the 2013 Champion of Champions winner. Retired from competition Gigolo now relies on his progeny to represent him in the winners circles in campdrafting, challenge and polocrosse. Bulla Martha, Dolgwili Norman, Lealukas Kalissa and Bewick lead a very big pack of Gigolos winners.
Bewick was always going to be given every opportunity as Michael and Vicki are dedicated and demanding to ensure their horses perform at the very top level. After a solid grounding his introduction to competition was seamless as the emphasis was as always with the Hiscock horses, on longevity. They believe too much work goes into having a solid 6yo horse to not be able to enjoy that horse as a solid campaigner for the next 12-14 years. Bewick fits this mould perfectly.

Mewburn Bewick now has progeny that are competing alongside their father and their grandmother. Mewburn Corvette and Toonga Chrome are both competing at Warwick in 2023 with Toonga Chrome finaling in the Cannings with Pete Comiskey. His progeny are also being recognised in the polocrosse arena with Berragoon Ida selling for $40,000 and continuing on to win Best Horse of Carnival Awards at regional carnivals and at the Nationals.
Mewburn Bewick has now been sold to Pat and Luke Hardwick however the story will continue as Michael will continue to campaign him on the brothers’ behalf. Their win in the Chinchilla Restricted Open in 2023 shows just what this duo is capable of.
