Metallic Reyting is sired by the great USA-based stallion Metallic Cat (imp), and his dam, Reyving About This Hat, is a novice Campdraft mare who was also successful in the cutting pen.

Pam and Ray Murphy of Iron River Quarter Horses purchased Metallic Reyting as a 4yo through the 2022 Nutrien Classic Sale. They attended the sale to buy a mare and had no intention of looking at a stallion. However, in the days leading up to the sale, they walked past Metallic Reyting in his stall several times and each time he caught their attention a little more. Pam said, “He was always keen for attention and enjoyed a pat. We could see his kind, loving nature as we couldn’t help but notice his excellent conformation.”
The Murphy’s purchased the mare they wanted at the sale and were preparing to head home when friends invited them to breakfast. It was the morning Metallic Reyting was being sold, and as they walked into the AELEC he was warming up in the arena. “He caught my eye; there was just something about him. It was just moments before he was to be auctioned”, Pam remembers.
Pam’s daughter Joanne noticed and asked what she was looking at. “I said, it’s a horse we have been walking past all week.” When the pair sat down, Ray immediately directed their attention to the arena, saying, ‘There is a really nice horse about to come in with a marvellous stop.” When Reyting walked into the sale pen, his ability convinced the family that they needed to get him in their stable.
Reyting was bred, trained, and presented at the 2022 Nutrien Classic sale by the Wheatley family. After purchasing him, the Murphys entrusted his ongoing training and showing to Steve Smith and his team at Steve Smith Cutting Horses.

Steve and Reyting proved to be an unstoppable force! With each cutting show they attended, the partnership added to their growing list of accolades and cemented their status at the 2023 4CYTE NCHA National Finals. They became the first in cutting history to claim four titles in one year, a remarkable feat. In 2024, Metallic Reyting and Steve were the Area 5 Open Champions, and Metallic Reyting earned the title of 2024 Highest Point Stallion of the Year.
Steve describes Metallic Reyting as a beautiful-minded, trainable, cowy, and athletic horse that ticks all the boxes for a world-class quality stud.
The Murphys say that buying Metallic Reyting is one of the best decisions they’ve made. “We feel as it was just meant to be. The enjoyment we have had watching him compete and do so well with his great trainer Steve Smith has been very nice to see. These memories are and always will be unforgettable.”
His young progeny (as of mid-2025) display his traits with their good looks, ability to learn quickly, and impressive conformation.
2024 saw Steve & Reyting make Cutting History. Never before had a Horse and Rider claimed 4 Titles in one year.
LTE: US$637,711. USA major achievements:
Metallic Reyting’s dam was a successful cutter placing 3rd in the 2016 Victorian Futurity.
She then went on to become a successful Novice Campdraft horse with Julie Duff.
Jason Leitch has said of Cat N A Hat, “He is one of the most athletic and cowy horses I have been involved with.”
(Horsezone, Five Minutes With Jason Leitch, April 2012).
Cat N A Hat competed in the US and won over $100,000 before being exported to Australia. His owners at the time, John Mitchell and Jason Leitch, believed strongly that he would be an ideal fit for the campdraft market.
While the plan was always to focus on his progeny, Cat N A Hat was given just a handful of starts campdrafting, to provide an opportunity to showcase his athletic ability.
“He took to it like a duck to water”, David Bell said. “From those few starts, he won 3 opens.”
Cat N A Hat has gone on to sire Champions in a multitude of disciplines.
