Darrell Gains and Lisa Hutchinson have always been involved with horses and had a few well-bred and performed mares. They were happy to do a few cuttings and the odd campdraft each year but spent as much time reef fishing and crabbing as they did riding horses. They weren’t really into breeding, and when they did breed a foal, they mostly used one of Lisa’s sisters’ stallions.

In 2022 they realised that the mares they had sitting in the paddock were a wasted resource. And so, it began. The commitment was made to breed at least five foals a year – all by artificial insemination and mostly embryo transfer. For the next three years they continued to build mare power – selecting not just for genetics but also for size, type, trainability and performance.
“Breeding Season” was now a commitment each year and the boat stayed in the shed from September through to February. They still had no plans to own a stallion – it was easier to get the genetics they wanted from a canister or vac pac. Darrell would often make the comment, “The only thing around here with balls is me”.
Uno Hell was purchased sight unseen in July of 2025. His breeding, conformation, size and colour had appealed to Darrell & Lisa since they first noticed him as a 2yo. By World Champion and Hall of Fame stallion NRR Cat King Cole, and out of Australia’s legendary Triple Crown winner and Hall of Fame mare One Hellofa Spin, they failed to see how the horse couldn’t be good.
When Uno Hell was advertised, they were surprised, and although they weren’t interested initially, they started to seriously consider the benefits of owning their own stud. Ultimately a deal was struck, and Uno Hell joined the stables of Murtlegrove Farming Pty Ltd. Standing at 15hh, with an amazing temperament, exceptional confirmation and plenty of cattle sense, they believed he would be a perfect cross for their ASH and QH mares.

With limited exposure, Uno Hell has already shown plenty of promise in competition. At the 2024 Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge and Campdraft, a strong dry work pattern had him sitting equal fifth after the first round, before some bad luck in the wet work section saw him narrowly miss the final. He then headed to the NCHA Futurity Campdraft, where he made the final at his very first campdraft start.
Later that year, at the Dumbalk New Year’s Eve Campdraft, Uno Hell tied for fifth in the Maiden B with two impressive scores of 88. An eye injury resulted in him being sidelined for much of the 2025 competition season.
Uno Hell is now being campaigned by Courtney Mulcahy who describes him as: “One of the best minded stallions I have ridden. He is super cowy and travels really light in your hands – he is incredibly smooth. He also has the kindest nature and is just a pleasure to have at home and to cart to shows. I think you could breed him to most any mare and get a really good result”.
Campaigned by Wyatt Young.
Uno Hell started his career as a Cutter. He was broken in and trained by Jamie Seccombe before being shown at the NCHA Futurity by Phil Smith. He later moved to Mat Oakley’s stables and continued his futurity year at Darling Downs and St George Futurities.
