Not all incredible performers come with an exceptional pedigree of champions. Six Spins does. He is from a revered and sought-after line of mares that has produced champion progeny. His dam, Triple Spin, was a multiple aged-event finalist and NCHA Derby Champion. She is also the dam of Magicool, winner of the 2024 NCHA Champion of Champions Cutting, 2022 NCHA Autumn Spectacular Back to Back Gold Cups, 2018 NCHA Open Classic Challenge and much more. Six Spins’ granddam, Bon Olena, produced other exceptional progeny, including Doc’s Bon Jovi. Six Spins is by Dual Rey, whose offspring have earned in excess of $56 million.

While Six Spins has retired from competition, he is one of the most dynamic, cowy and successful open-cutting horses in Australian history. When Six Spins walked into the arena, everyone paid attention. He loved a tough cow, it made him hungrier and more intense. For this reason, even down in the draw he could dominate the toughest of cattle and win among a field of the very best. His win at the 2013 Darling Downs Cutting Club Open is legendary, when he came out last in a field of 53 top horses to post a 153-point score.
Six Spins is an NCHA Hall Of Fame Inductee and was the 2012/13 NCHA Hi Point Open Stallion.
Lane and Mel Clegg bought Six Spins in 2022. He was 16yo, and his show career had wound down. Lane remembered Triple Spin from the old days. He believes she is one of the best mares in Australian Cutting history. A chance to own this stallion, from such a phenomenal mare, was too good an opportunity to miss.
Not long after buying Six Spins, Lane gave him one last show run at Taroom. “I just wanted to say I had shown him once. He had nothing to prove, but I wanted to have ridden the horse we were going to stand”. They came out last in the herd and marked 72 points.

Until that point Six Spins had been bred lightly, yet has produced winners including Triple Six, who has earnings of over $50,000 and is a novice campdraft horse (as at 2025); Mr Reddington, winner of the St George Futurity with Alana Tones; Pepsie Spin finalist in four out of five Futurities, Dalby Futurity Reserve Champion, Q25 Open Derby Champion & NCHA Limited Open Derby Champion with Paxton Pulford; and multiple finalist The Sixth Sense.
Lane and Mel are adamant that Six Spins crosses well over any mare. He is athletic, well put together, and produces good-sized progeny. Lane says there is something special about the horse – an X factor that makes him stand out. “He is an elegant dude. He has charisma. You can’t help but notice him”.
The horse they fondly call Rowdy is a family favourite. 9yo Piper Clegg idolises him and is at feed time every night, requiring a smooch before giving her favourite horse his dinner. Rowdy happily obliges.
As fads come and go, it is the exceptionally bred individuals who have proven their own ability at the highest levels, who consistently breed great progeny and leave a legacy. Six Spins in one such special horse.
