Tapt Dancin Cat is the superstar cutting sire imported from America by the Heslin Family. They wanted to buy and import a horse from America that would be the top performing cutting horse in Australia and then become a sire whose genetics would influence the Australian Cutting industry.
The Heslins had always been friends with American horse trainer, Chris Cox, and it was through this connection and with their growing interest in Cutting, that they made a trip to America. They visited Chris and attended the US NCHA Futurity at Fort Worth in 2008. Full of enthusiasm from this great event they gave instructions for Chris to source the best colt he could find.
He found a weaner colt at the Fort Worth Quarter Horse Sale. After studying his dam and his paternal dam, he was extremely impressed. His siblings were exceptional and no part of his pedigree showed any weakness. Chris recommended the colt with full confidence. Receiving the go ahead, he purchased Tapt Dancin Cat at auction as a weaner.
The colt was left with Chris who broke him in and prepared him for the Futurity. Unfortunately, due to other commitments, Chris wasn’t able to show Tapt Dancin Cat at the Futurity and with a catch rider he finalled in the John Deere Division. The decision was then made to export him to Australia.
The idea was to show Tapt Dancin Cat at the 2011 NCHA Futurity and time was of the essence to have him through quarantine and prepared in time. Arriving in Australia with a very tight schedule of just 5 weeks til the Futurity, he was sent straight to Todd Graham.
After a hectic preparation Todd had him at his absolute best and his first big win came after those 5 frantic weeks with a win in the NCHA Derby.
This win is not only testament to his brilliant ability, but also his attitude and temperament. To be uplifted from one side of the world, rushed through an unsettling time in quarantine, started with a new trainer, a short preparation and then to win a major event is simply phenomenal.
His cutting career results speak for themselves and Tapper is certainly one of the most exciting horses to have entered the cutting pen in Australia, but with his cutting career behind him and his progeny establishing themselves as elite performers in their right the decision was made to sell him.
In 2017 Rod and Tish Healey, Healey Quarter Horses, purchased Tapt Dancin Cat. It was Trish’s dream come true to purchase such an elite animal that she had always admired. When she first became interested in the sport of cutting she would watch his old commercial and show others as she was just in awe of him and how athletic he was.
But now with him safely in their stable they couldn’t be happier with him. He has certainly lived up to his reputation as a gentleman and they believe he is the ultimate sire. He remains a champion in his own right and with his impeccable bloodlines, temperament and his outstanding young progeny he will be without doubt one of Australia’s leading sires of cutting and campdrafting progeny for years to come.
Already, although only young he is one of only three stallions to have progeny win both the Open and Non Pro Futurity in the same year: TP Dancin In The Reyn with Jamie Creek and Tapt Choice with Jackie Graham respectively.
The next chapter…
Hugely exciting news out of the Tapt Dancin Cat camp at the start of 2020 when Tapper headed back to his place of birth the USA.
Interest in this highly accomplished competitor and sire in the USA prompted the move by owners Healey Quarter Horses who chose to stand him at SDP Buffalo Ranch.
He is still offered in Australia via frozen semen, nothing has changed other than his location.
Exciting times ahead.
