Denis And Jane Sims purchased QXH Bonitas Stylish Oak, better known as “Tuff” in August, 2010.
This was the start of a change of life for their whole family as they have embraced the cutting world, learning the skills involved in this precision sport and enjoying the highs and lows of competition.
After watching the Futurity in Toowoomba in 2007, they were interested in getting into cutting as a family. They went back the next two years to watch the Futurity before deciding that this was a sport they would all be interested in getting involved in.
At this point they still didn’t own any cutting horses so Denis and Jane started looking for a young horse and found a 2 year old colt by Peptos Stylish Oak out of Freckles Bonita Two. As soon as Denis and Jane laid eyes on him they knew he was the horse for them.
In the beginning Denis rode and worked him just like he would any other horse he had over the previous years for mustering. This was then the start of one of those rare fairytale horse stories where Tuff and Denis learnt the sport together.
Denis started off training him when he was a 2.y.o. He admits that by the time he was a 3.y.o it was obvious that Tuff was actually training Denis. QXH Bonitas Stylish Oak is a genuine and honest horse and no matter what is asked of him he always gives his best. Denis never stops learning and therefore neither does he, so it has been an interesting journey and one that is accumulating a long list of wins and places in the competition pen.
Without having the background in cutting Denis used the skills he has gained over the years through working predatory working dogs and has combined this with the cutting skills he keeps acquiring. This unusual combination has worked and QXH Bonitas Stylish Oak has developed into a seriously good competition horse.
Meanwhile, Denis and Jane have found cutting truly challenging and rewarding and QXH Bonitas Stylish Oak has given the Sims so much enjoyment and opened up a whole other life for the family.
