John Brekelmens Best of the Best Open Non Pro

Last week was a particularly hectic week for Select Sires, what with the DDCC Futurity & the Cloncurry Stockmans Challenge & Campdraft happening concurrently.

You could be forgiven for thinking we had missed a major event, but you would be wrong. A very, very special event was held at the Darling Downs Cutting Club Futurity Show, The John Brekelemens Best of the Best Open Non Pro. We’ve waited to give it the space it deserves.

The equine industry was devastated by the loss of John last week, conspicuous by his absence, his name still appearing on the published draw & the results.  He should have been first out in this event, he wasn’t, but he was with every competitor who rode in his memory, so 15 entries still stood!

It was his event, it carried his name, it started with the playing of the song people associate with John, “The Devil went down to Georgia”, and it ended with a minutes silence.  It really was a heartfelt beautiful tribute and it was undoubtedly hard for his peers.
